The main result here is to show that there exist infinite-measure preserving actions of \(\mathbb Z^2\) that cannot be realized as a smooth action on a smooth manifold (in contrast to the case of a single transformation). The invariant used to establish this result is a form of `slow' (sub-exponential) entropy for \(\mathbb Z^2\) actions.
