The author gives an overview of Griffiths' approach to the calculus of variations in one independent variable [\textit{P. A. Griffiths}, Exterior differential systems and the calculus of variations. Boston - Basel - Stuttgart: Birkhäuser (1983; Zbl 0512.49003)]. The general theory is illustrated by an example involving critical curves of functionals defined by quadratic polynomials in the centro-affine curvature. This example is developed in detail throughout the paper, culminating in figures showing the critical curves.
