Quantum mechanics. With applications to nanotechnology and information science (English)

This book is a grandiose project creating a unified source of all important information related to modern Quantum Mechanics. The 971-page work is a mixture of a textbook and an encyclopedia. Or even just a special type of encyclopedia --- the one containing articles ordered logically, rather then alphabetically. Fifteen Chapters comprise material which can serve for numerous introductive and advanced courses on Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Information, Quantum Engineering / Nanotechnology, Quantum Chemistry. Five Appendices briefly explain requisite mathematical notions and concepts used in the book. The on-line support of the book ({\texttt{https://sites.google.com/site/thequantumbook}}) supplies some deeper treatments of recently developing topics and a review on Classical Mechanics.NEWLINENEWLINEThe book is oriented on an advanced reader such as graduate students, teaching and research faculty. The exposition aims to be comprehensive and useful for a wide spectrum of specialists focusing, e.g., on Theoretical or Experimental Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Informatics or Mathematics. Thereby the treatments reflect different aspects of the subjects of study: present mathematical considerations and theoretical conclusions, discuss particular experiments, devices and physical systems, outline the interplay between theory and practice. The text is of encyclopedic style: very informative and concise. The material is good designed and has a very good balance between verbal explanations and math in the text and between the text itself, problems and illustrations.NEWLINENEWLINEThe authors start with a historical survey and fundamental concepts giving birth to Quantum Mechanics. Then proceed with standard topics of quantum-mechanical textbooks in Chapters 2-4. Further Chapters are devoted to more advanced and recently hot topics. Chapter 5 is devoted to Quantum Information and discusses decoherence, entanglement and EPR paradox on one hand and quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography and quantum computing algorithms on the other hand. Time-dependence, correlations and quantum optimal control theory are subjects of Chapter 6, approximation methods are presented in Chapter 7. Chapters 8-12 consider identical particles, electronic structure of multielectron systems, molecules, solids (in particular crystals, semiconductors and insulators are discussed) and also scattering theory. Chapters 13-15 are devoted to low-dimensional systems (including a detailed presentation of Graphene, description of systems of other dimensions and discussion of disorder in mesoscopic systems), many-body theory, density functional theory.
