Mathematical conceptual changes in Renaissance music (Q2928871)

A furtive look at the change in the way musical ratios were treated mathematically in the late 15th and in the 16th century, originating with the work of Erasmus of Höritz, consisting of the introduction of geometrical rather than only purely arithmetical approaches to ratios (who writes in 1500(?): ``in musical demonstrations we are forced to use all kinds of ratios \(\ldots\) since not all shapes of consonances and also dissonances are founded in rational ratios and for that reason we must not neglect the ratios of surds'').
