The authors present rigorous upper and lower bounds on the emptiness formation probability for the ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ quantum spin system. This is the probability, in the ground state of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet, to find a block of spins ferromagnetically aligned. It is a measure of the quantum nature of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet that this probability is not exactly zero, even in the ground state. For a \(d\)-dimensional system the authors find a rate of decay of the order \(\exp(-cL^{d+1})\) where \(L\) is the sidelength of the box in which the emptiness formation event is occurred.
