Let \(X\) be an \(n\)-dimensional smooth projective variety of general type. Then the map \(\phi_m(X)\) defined by \(mK_X\) is birational for \(m\) sufficiently large. One of the fundamental problems in birational geometry is to determine the values of such \(m\). It is known [\textit{C. D. Hacon} and \textit{J. McKernan}, Invent. Math. 166, No. 1, 1--25 (2006; Zbl 1121.14011); \textit{S. Takayama}, Invent. Math. 165, No. 3, 551--587 (2006; Zbl 1108.14031)] that there exists a number \(c(n)\) depending only on \(n\) such that \(\phi_m(X)\) is birational if \(m> c(n)\). It is also known that \(c(2)=5\) [\textit{E. Bombieri}, Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 42, 171--219 (1972; Zbl 0259.14005)] and \(c(3)=61\) [\textit{J. A. Chen} and \textit{M. Chen}, Compos. Math. 151, No. 6, 1041--1082 (2015; Zbl 1329.14030)]. Because of this result it is of interest to study the behaviour of \(\phi_m(X)\) for small values of \(m\). If \(X\) is a minimal projective threefold such that \(p_g(X)\geq 4\), then it is known that \(\phi_5(X)\) is birational [\textit{M. Chen}, Int. J. Math. 14, No. 5, 515--528 (2003; Zbl 1070.14009)]. This paper studies the pluricanonical map \(\phi_4(X)\) in the case when \(X\) is a minimal smooth projective threefold with \(p_g(X)=4\). In particular, the geometry of \(X\) is described in the case when \(\phi_4(X)\) is not birational.
