Let \[ \Delta_h f(x) = f(x+h)- f(x) \quad \text{and} \quad \Delta^{M+1}_h f(x) = \Delta_h \big( \Delta^M_h f \big) (x), \] \(M\in \mathbb N\), be the usual differences. The related ball means \[ d^M_t f(x) = t^{-n} \int_{|h| \leq t} \big| \Delta^M_h f(x) \big| \, dh, \qquad t>0, \] can be used to characterized some Besov spaces \(B^s_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) under suitable restrictions for the parameters \(p,q,s\). The paper deals with generalizations of these assertions to Besov spaces with variable exponents \(B^{\alpha (\cdot), \tau (\cdot)}_{p(\cdot), q(\cdot)} (\mathbb R^n)\).
