    The authors study renormalized solutions of the reaction-diffusion system with variable exponent \[ \begin{cases} u_t = \nabla \cdot \left( g(x) |\nabla u|^{p(x)-2} \nabla u \right) - 2 \lambda w, \quad & (x,t) \in \Omega \times (0,T), \\ w_t = \Delta w -(f(x) -u), \quad & (x,t) \in \Omega \times (0,T), \\ u(x,0) = f(x), \; w(x,0) = 0, \quad & x \in \Omega, \end{cases} \] endowed with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, where \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N\) is a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary, \(T>0\), \(\lambda >0\), \(f \in L^1(\Omega)\) and \[ g(x) = \frac{1}{1+ k_1 |(\nabla G_{\sigma_1} \ast f)(x)|^2}, \quad p(x) = 1 + \frac{1}{1+ k_2 |(\nabla G_{\sigma_2} \ast f)(x)|^2}, \quad x \in \Omega, \] with positive constants \(k_i, \sigma_i\) and Gaussian kernel \(G_\sigma\). The authors prove the existence of a unique renormalized solution to the above problem. If in addition \(f \in L^r (\Omega)\) for some \(r \in [1,2)\) and \(\min_{x \in \bar{\Omega}} p(x) > 2- \frac{1}{N+1}\) is satisfied, they further prove additional regularity properties of \(u\). The proofs of these results particularly rely on the use of regularized problems, truncation, and compactness arguments.
