Let \(X\) be a Hausdorff space without isolated points and denote by \(LB(X)\) the space of all locally bounded functions \(f:X \rightarrow \mathbb{R}\). For \(x_0\in X\), the authors introduce a certain relation \(\leq_{x_0}\) on \(LB(X)\), which, after passing to appropriate equivalence classes, produces a Riesz space \(LB(X,x_0)\). Using a version of the Hahn-Banach theorem for order unit spaces, they show the existence of certain linear functionals \(\mu\) on \(LB(X,x_0)\) with \(\mu(f)=\lim_{x\to x_0}f(x)\) for any \(f\in LB(X,x_0)\) for which the limit exists. These functionals are called Banach limits. The aforementioned constructions are then further investigated from the point of view of category theory.
