      Kawamata's subadjunction theorem is a fundamental tool in minimal model theory and higher dimensional algebraic geometry in characteristic zero. Its proof is based on the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem and Hodge theory. However, both are known to be fail in positive characteristic. In the paper under review, a relative version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem is established in dimension \(3\) and characteristic \(p>5\) (Theorem 1). Using this result, the authors prove that the analog of Kawamata's subadjunction theorem holds under some mild technical conditions (Theorem 2, 4). In particular, under the same assumptions, minimal log canonical centers for threefolds are normal. They also give the complete proof of a canonical bundle formula for normal surfaces when a general fiber is a smooth rational curve (Theorem 3).
