The paper under review is devoted to the study of negatively curved Kähler-Einstein metrics on quasi-projective manifolds. The main results established are the following. Theorem 1. Let \(X\) be a compact Kähler manifold, \(D=\sum a_i D_i\) a divisor with simple normal crossings support having coefficients \(a_i \in (-\infty, 1]\) and such that \(K_X+D\) is ample. Let \(\omega \in c_1(K_X+D)\) be a Kähler form, and let \(\omega_{\text{KE}}=\omega+dd^c \varphi_{\text{KE}}\) be the Kähler-Einstein metric of \((X,D)\), i.e., \(\text{Ric}\;\omega_{\text{KE}} = -\omega_{\text{KE}} + [D]\). Then \[ \varphi_{\text{KE}} = - \sum_{a_i=1} \log \log^{2} \frac{1}{|s_i|^2} +O(1). \] Theorem 2. Let \((X, D)\) be a projective log canonical pair such that \(K_X+D\) is ample. Then its Kähler-Einstein metric \(\omega_{\text{KE}}\) has mixed cone and cusp singularities along \(D\) on the simple normal crossings locus \((X,D)_{\text{reg}}\) of the pair. As a corollary of the above theorem, the authors obtain that the Kähler-Einstein metric of a stable variety (in the sense of Kollár-Sherpherd-Barron and Alexeev) is cuspidal near the double crossing points.
