    Let \(E\) be a subset of \({\mathbb{R}}^n\), \(a^1,\ldots,a^m\) pairwise noncollinear vectors from \({\mathbb{R}}^n\), and \(f:E\to {\mathbb{R}}\) a function of the form \[ f(x)=\sum_{i=1}^m \varphi _i (a^i\cdot x), \] where \(\varphi _i\) is a real-valued function defined on \(\Delta _i =\{ a^i \cdot x : x\in E \}\), \(i=1,\ldots,m\). The authors assume that the function \(f\) is continuous on \(E\) and ask, what can we say about the regularity of \(\varphi _i\). They prove that if \(E\) is a convex body, the \(\varphi _i\) are continuous on \(\text{int}(\Delta _i)\), \(i=1,\ldots,m\), and \(t_0 \in \Delta _i\) is a boundary point for some \(i\), then \(\varphi _i (t)=o(- \log \| t-t_0\| )\) as \(t\to t_0\), \(t \in \Delta _i\). Then they show that this logarithmic estimate cannot be improved. Finally, the authors prove that if \(E\) is an open convex set and the \(\varphi _i\) satisfy some mild regularity conditions, then the \(\varphi _i\) are continuous on \(\Delta _i\), \(i=1,\ldots,m\). There is a remark that this theorem can be extended to the classes \(C^k\). A related result was given by \textit{A. Pinkus} [Indag. Math., New Ser. 24, No. 4, 725--738 (2013; Zbl 1305.26036)].
