Let \((M,J)\) be an almost complex manifold of real dimension \(n\), i.e., \(M\) is a manifold and \(J\) is a \(C^{\infty}\) smooth endomorphism of the tangent bundle \(TM\) such that \(J^2=-\mathrm{id}\). Let \(\Omega\subset M\) be an open set. An upper semicontinuous function \(u\) defined on \(\Omega\) is plurisubharmonic if for every holomorphic disc \(\lambda:\mathbb D\to \Omega\) the function \(u\circ \lambda\) is subharmonic. The aim of this paper is to define the Monge-Ampère operator on almost complex manifolds. The main result states that for almost complex manifolds of dimension four the complex Monge-Ampère operator \((i\partial \bar \partial u)^2\) is well defined as a regular Borel measure for any continuous plurisubharmonic function \(u\). The following Richberg theorem is used in the proof of the main theorem. If \(u,h\in \mathcal C(M)\), \(h>0\) and \(u\) is strictly plurisubharmonic function, then there exists a strictly plurisubharmonic function \(\psi\in \mathcal C^{\infty}(M)\) such that \[ u\leq \psi\leq u+h. \] In the last section the comparison principle for the complex Monge-Ampère operator on four-dimensional almost complex manifolds is proved.
