The compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations with viscosity depeding on the density are considered. The results of \textit{A. Matsumura} and \textit{K. Nishihara} [Japan J. Appl. Math. 2, 17--25 (1985; Zbl 0602.76080)] and \textit{A. Matsumura} and \textit{Y. Wang} [Methods Appl. Anal. 17, No. 3, 279--290 (2010; Zbl 1242.76059)] are extended for non-linear stability of viscous shock with large amplitudes and arbitrary \(\alpha\) in the relation \(\mu = v^{-\alpha}\), where \(\mu, v\) are the viscosity and density. A new effective velocity \(h\) is introduced and the initial system is transformed into a parabolic equation for the specific volume and a transport equation for \(h\). Some \textit{a priori} estimates are given, to get a global existence theorem. For this, a specific representation of the pressure in terms of density is used and some useful inequalities are obtained. Classical regularity results for parabolic equations, Sobolev embedding theorem and Sobolev inequality are used.
