In the paper under review, varieties of associative algebras over a field are investigated. Recall that a permutation identity is one of the form \(x_1x_2\cdots x_n=x_{\sigma 1}x_{\sigma 2}\cdots x_{\sigma n}\) where \(\sigma\) is a nontrivial permutation of the set \(\{1,2,\ldots,n\}\). Varieties of algebras that satisfy such identities are called permutative. Almost permutative varieties are minimal elements in the lattice of all nonpermutative varieties. In fact, by Zorn's lemma, every nonpermutative variety contains an almost permutative variety. Therefore, a variety is permutative iff it does not contain forbidden algebras, i.e. generating algebras for almost permutative varieties. In the paper, a complete list of forbidden algebras is given and by that the complete description both of almost permutative varieties and of permutative varieties of associative algebras over an infinite field in arbitrary characteristic is given.
