This paper is concerned with the Dirichlet problem for the Beltrami equation with two characteristics. Such equations have the form \(\bar \partial f=\mu \partial f+\nu \overline{\partial f}\), where \(\partial f=\frac{1}{2}(f_x-if_y)\), \(\bar \partial f=\frac{1}{2}(f_x+if_y)\), and \(\mu\) and \(\nu\) are measurable functions such that \(|\mu |+|\nu |<1\) almost everywhere. The boundary values are prescribed as \(\lim_{z\to\zeta} \mathrm{Re}\,f(z)= \varphi(\zeta)\), \(\zeta\in \partial D\), where \(D\) is a Jordan domain in the complex plane. The ellipticity of the two-characteristic Beltrami equation is measured by the distortion coefficient \(K=\frac{1+|\mu |+|\nu |}{1-|\mu |-|\nu |}\) which is a measurable positive function. When \(K\) is unbounded, the equation is degenerate elliptic, and the existence of its solutions depends on the degree of integrability of \(K\). The authors call \(f\) a \textit{regular solution} of the Beltrami equation if \(f\) is a continuous, discrete, and open map which is locally in the Sobolev class \(W^{1,1}\) and has the Jacobian determinant \(J_f\) that is nonzero almost everywhere. This paper gives several conditions on \(K\) that ensure the existence of a regular solution of the Dirichlet problem. For example, if \(K\) is locally integrable and for every \(z_0\in\overline{D}\) we have \(\int_{\epsilon<|z-z|<\epsilon_0} \frac{K (z) }{|z-z_0|^2} = o(\log^{2}(1/\epsilon))\) as \(\epsilon\to 0\), then a regular solution exists for every nonconstant continuous function \(\varphi : \partial D\to\mathbb R\).
