Let \(n\) denote a positive integer, \(D\) a division ring with centre \(F\) and \(N\) a subnormal subgroup of \(\text{GL}(n,D)\). The authors consider various conditions on \(N\) or/and \(D\) that ensure that \(N\) is central. The conditions on \(N\) include \(N\) finitely generated, locally soluble, locally nilpotent, an Engel group or an FC-group. Conditions on \(D\) include \(D\) locally finite-dimensional over \(F\), the finitely generated division subrings of \(D\) are finite-dimensional over their centres, \(D\) algebraic over \(F\) and \(D^*/F^*\) periodic (\(D^*\) and \(F^*\) denote the multiplicative groups of \(D\) and \(F\)). As to be expected the case where \(n=1\) is the most problematic. If \(n\geq 2\) (sometimes \(n\geq 3\)) proofs are frequently simpler or require weaker hypotheses on \(D\).
