The authors consider the critical wave equation \[ -u_{tt}+\Delta u+u^5=0 \] in \(\mathbb R^{1+3}\). It is proved that there exists \(\epsilon_0>0\) such that for any \(\delta>0\) and \(\mu\in \mathbb R\) with \(|\mu|\leq\epsilon_0\) there exists a time \(t_0\geq 1\) and an energy class solution \(u\) of this equation on \([t_0,\infty)\times\mathbb R^3\) of the form \[ u(t,x)=t^{\mu/2}W(t^\mu x)+\eta(t,x),\quad |x|\leq t,\;\; t\geq t_0, \] where \(W(x)\) is the ground state soliton, and an estimate on the error term \(\eta\) is established. This result shows that a strong version of the soliton resolution conjecture is wrong, and the long time behavior of the solutions to the critical wave equation is more complicated than expected.
