For a Tychonoff space \(X\), let \(C(X)\) be the set of all real-valued continuous functions on \(X\). Over the last few years and in several papers, the present authors have been interested in the internal characterization of \(C(X)\) as various types of lattices. Along this line, in the paper under review, the Riesz space structure is considered on \(C(X)\). Here it is proved, as a main result, the following (Theorem 2): ``An Archimedean Riesz space \(E\) with a designated weak unit is isomorphic to \(C(X)\) for some Tychonoff space \(X\) iff: (i) \(E\) is zero-separating; (ii) \(E\) is locally uniformly complete; and (iii) the intersection of real maximal ideals of \(E\) is \(\{0\}\).'' Note that the condition (ii) of local uniform completeness was introduced by the authors in [Appl. Categ. Struct. 19, No. 2, 439--454 (2011; Zbl 1226.54020)], and it is now the key in order to obtain last characterization of \(C(X)\) without using the classical Yosida representation theorem, which is the principal interest of the present paper. Recall that another interesting characterization of \(C(X)\) as a Riesz space was given by \textit{F. Montalvo}, \textit{A. Pulgarín} and \textit{B. Requejo} [Positivity 14, No. 3, 473--480 (2010; Zbl 1206.46027)].
