For a family \(f: \chi\longrightarrow S\) of Calabi-Yau (CM) manifolds of dimension \(n\), let \[ \left( E = \bigoplus_{p+q=n} E^{p,q},\; \theta = \bigoplus_{p+q=n}\theta^{p,q} \right) \] be the associated Higgs bundle, where \(E^{p,q}= R^qf_*\Omega^p_{\chi/S}\) and the Higgs field \[ \theta^{p,q} : E^{p,q} \longrightarrow E^{p-1,q+1}\otimes \Omega_S \] is given by the cup product with the Kodaira-Spencer map. Then the length of the Yukawa coupling \(\zeta(f)\) of \(f\) is defined by \[ \zeta(f) = \min\{i\geq 1, \; \theta^i=0\}- 1, \] where \(\theta^i\) is the \(i\)th iterated Higgs field \[ \theta^i: E^{n,0} \overset{\theta^{n,0}}{\rightarrow} E^{n-1,1}\otimes\Omega_X\overset{\theta^{n-1,1}}{\rightarrow} \cdots\overset{\theta^{n-i+1,i-1}}{\rightarrow} E^{n-i,i}\otimes S^i\Omega_X. \] The local Torelli theorem implies that, for a non-isotrivial family \(f\) of \(n\)-dimensional CY manifolds, we have \(1\leq \zeta(f) \leq n\). The case \(\zeta(f)=n\) has been well studied and in the paper under review, the authors studies the case \(\zeta(f)=1\). The main result of this paper is as follows: Theorem~1.1. Let \(n\geq 3\) be an odd number and \({\mathcal M}_{n,n+3}\) be the moduli space of \(n+3\) hyperplane arrangements of \({\mathbb P}^n\) in general position. Let \(f_n: \chi_n\to {\mathcal M}_{n,n+3}\) be the family of \(\frac{n+3}{2}\)-fold cyclic covers of \({\mathbb P}^n\) branched along the \(n+3\) hyperplanes in general position. Then (i) the family \(f_n\) admits a simultaneous resolution \(\hat{f}_n:\hat\chi_n \to {\mathcal M}_{n,n+3}\) which is a maximal family of \(n\)-dimensional projective CY manifolds. Here, a family \(f\) is said to e maximal if it is locally a versal deformations of each CY closed fiber of \(f\), (ii) \(\zeta(f_n)=1\), so that Shafarevich's conjecture holds for \(\hat{f}_n\), (iii) the family \(\hat{f}_3\) admits a partial compactification to a Shimura family over an arithmetic quotient of \({\mathbb B}^3\), and finally (iv) the families \(\hat{f}_4\) and \(\hat{f}_9\) have a sub \({\mathbb Q}\)-PVHS which uniformizes a Zariski open subset of an arithmetic ball quotient.
