This paper studies the problem when an integer \(q\) is the order of an automorphism of a smooth hypersurface \(H \subset \mathbb{P}^{n+1}_{\mathbb{C}}\) of degree \(d\). Let \(n \geq 2\), \(d \geq 3\) be integers such that \((n,d)\not=(2,4)\). It is shown that a positive integer \(q\) with \(\mathrm{gcd}(q,d)=\mathrm{gcd}(q,d-1)=1\) is the order of an automorphism of a smooth hypersurface of dimension \(n\) and degree \(d\) if and only if there exists \(k \in \{1,\ldots , n+2\}\) such that \((1-d)^k\equiv 1 \mathrm{mod} q\). In particular, if \(q\) is prime, then \(q < (d-1)^{n+1}\). Finally the author shows that a smooth hypersurface \(X\) of dimension \(n\) and degree \(d\) admits an automorphism of prime order \(p>(d-1)^n\), if and only if \(X\) is the Klein hypersurface given by \(x_0^{d-1}x_1+x_1^{d-1}x_2+\cdots+x_n^{d-1}x_{n+1}+x_{n+1}^{d-1}x_0=0\), \(n+2\) is prime and \(p=\Phi_{n+2}(1-d)\), where \(\Phi_{n+2}(t)\) is the \((n+2)\)-cyclotomic polynomial. The proof of these results is heavily based on the fact that every automorphism of a hypersurface in \(\mathbb{P}^n\) is induced by an automorphism of \(\mathbb{P}^n\) and therefore is linear.
