The setting of this article is algebraic geometry over an algebraically closed field \(k\) of characteristic zero. Let us denote by \(\mathbb{T}\) an algebraic torus of dimension \(d\), which is by definition an algebraic group isomorphic to \(\mathbb{G}_{m}^{d}\), where \(\mathbb{G}_{m}\) stands for the multiplicative group of the ground field \(k\). A toric \(\mathbb{T}\)-variety is a normal variety endowed with an effective \(\mathbb{T}\)-action and having an open \(\mathbb{T}\)-orbit. Such varieties are described combinatorially by a fan of rational cones living in \(N_{\mathbb{Q}} = \mathbb{Q}\otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}N\), where \(N\simeq \mathbb{Z}^{d}\) is the one-parameter subgroup of the torus \(\mathbb{T}\). The purpose of this article is to study some properties of the action of the automorphism group \({\mathrm{Aut}}(X)\) of a complete toric variety \(X\) in terms of its defining fan \(\Sigma_{X}\). More precisely the main result is an entire description of the \({\mathrm{Aut}}^{0}(X)\)-orbits, where \({\mathrm{Aut}}^{0}(X) \subset {\mathrm{Aut}}(X)\) is the neutral connected component. The ingredient of the proof of this result is a description of the group \({\mathrm{Aut}}^{0}(X)\) in terms of Demazure roots previously introduced in the smooth case in [\textit{M. Demazure}, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 3, 507--588 (1970; Zbl 0223.14009)]. As a consequence, it is shown that the action of \({\mathrm{Aut}}(X)\) on \(X\) is transitive if and only if \(X\) is a product of projective spaces.
