The ``zero dilation index'' of a square matrix is the maximum size of a zero matrix that can be dilated to it. The purpose of the paper is to compute the zero dilation index for the upper triangular matrix, with zero main diagonal, whose upper diagonals are successive powers of a complex constant -- a Toeplitz-matrix, the so-called KMS (Kac-Murdock-Szegő) matrix [\textit{M. Kac} et al., J. Ration. Mech. Anal. 2, 767--800 (1953; Zbl 0051.30302)].
