In this paper the authors generalize a result obtained by the second author for spherical hypersurfaces [Math. Ann. 305, No. 4, 665--672 (1996; Zbl 0864.53040)] to \(n\)-dimensional submanifolds of the unit sphere \(S^{n+p}(1)\) with constant scalar curvature and parallel normalized mean curvature vector field. More concretely, they prove: Let \(M^n\) (\(n\geq 4\)) be an \(n\)-dimensional compact submanifold with constant normalized scalar curvature \(r\) in the \((n+p)\)-dimensional sphere \(S^{n+p}(1)\). If {\parindent= 0.5 cm \begin{itemize} \item[{\(\bullet\)}] \(\widetilde{r}=r-1\geq 0\), \item[{\(\bullet\)}] \(\nabla^\perp e_{n+1}=0\), where \(e_{n+1}\) is a unit normal vector field parallel to the mean curvature vector field, and \item[{\(\bullet\)}] the squared norm of the second fundamental form \(\| A\|^2\) of \(M^n\) satisfies \[ n \widetilde{r}\leq\| A\|^2\leq \frac{n}{(n-2)(n\widetilde{r}+2)}\left( n(n-1)\widetilde{r}^2+4(n-1)\widetilde{r}+n\right), \] \end{itemize}} then, either \(\| A\|^2=n\widetilde{r}\) and \(M^n\) is totally umbilical, or \[ \| A\|^2= \frac{n}{(n-2)(n\widetilde{r}+2)}\left( n(n-1)\widetilde{r}^2+4(n-1)\widetilde{r}+n\right), \] and \(M^n=S^1(\sqrt{1-a^2})\times S^{n-1}(a)\hookrightarrow S^{n+1}\hookrightarrow S^{n+p}\), \(a=\sqrt{(n-2)/(n(\widetilde{r}+1))}\). For \(n=3\) the method is not valid and this case is left open.
