A space \(X\) is (strongly) dominated by a space \(M\) if there is a cover \(\mathcal C\) of \(X\) such that (for each compactum \(K\subset X\) there is \(C\in\mathcal C\) such that \(K\subset C\),) each member of \(\mathcal C\) is compact and \(\mathcal C\) may be indexed by the compact subsets \(K\subset M\) as \(\{C_K\}\) so that \(C_K\subset C_L\) whenever \(K\subset L\). The (strong) metric domination index of \(X\), which is \((s)dm(X)=\min\{w(M)\mid M\) is a metric space (strongly) dominating \(X\}\), is studied. For example, \(ext(X)\leq dm(X)\leq \ell\Sigma(X)\) while for a compact space \(X\) we have \(dm(C_p(X))=\ell\Sigma(C_p(X))\), and a D-space \(X\) such that for every \(Y\subset X\) we have \(sdm(Y)\leq\omega\) must be Lindelöf.
