The authors survey some computer algebra programs developed by themselves over the last ten years for studying geometric problems via Pfaffian systems. As applications they study two-dimensional manifolds in Euclidean, affine and projective space and various questions related to envelopes. Reviewer's comment: Opposed to what the authors write on the first page of their article, a large number of computer algebra programs for dealing with exterior differential systems have already been available for many years. In particular, realisations of the Cartan-Kähler theory similar to what the authors describe have already existed for a long time. See for example \textit{E. A. Arajs} et al. [Sov. Math., Dokl. 15, 203--205 (1974); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 214, 737--738 (1974; Zbl 0302.58004)] or \textit{D. Hartley} and \textit{R. W. Tucker} [J. Symb. Comput. 12, No. 6, 655--667 (1991; Zbl 0753.58002)].
