The paper is devoted to the presentation and discussion of the textbook \textit{Institutiones arithmeticae} by F. Steidl (1778). It was the first textbook on arithmetic published for secondary schools after \textit{Ratio educationis} -- in fact it was the first official mathematics textbook in the Hungarian part of the Habsburg Empire after the reform of the education system. It was used for more than half a century (many editions and translations). It was original in a number of ways. Examples and problems given in it were presented in a practical context. It was written in question-and-answer style and contained several methodical instructions for the teacher. The authors of the paper under review present the textbook in a sociological and historical context and discuss its contents.
