Let \(A\) and \(X\) be pointed simplicial sets. This paper is concerned with the following questions. (1) Is there a pointed simplicial set \(Y\) such that \(X\) is equivalent to the pointed simplicial set \(\text{map}_*(A,Y)\) representing the pointed maps from~\(A\) to~\(Y\)? (2) If so, to what extent can \(Y\) be recovered from \(X\)? The authors show that if \(X\) is an extended \(A\)-mapping algebra then \(X\simeq \text{map}_*(A,Y)\) for some \(Y\), where \(X\) is an extended \(A\)-mapping algebra if there are suitable actions of colimits constructed out of~\(A\) on limits constructed out of~\(X\). They also prove a version of this result for lax extended \(A\)-mapping algebras; this version is homotopy invariant, in the sense that a pointed simplicial set equivalent to a lax extended \(A\)-mapping algebra is itself a lax extended \(A\)-mapping algebra. There is an associated procedure for constructing a \(\text{CW}_A\) approximation to a pointed simplicial set \(Y\) from the pointed simplical set \(\text{map}_*(A,Y)\).
