Let \({\mathcal U}\) be a minimal bounded homogeneous domain (see \textit{M. Maschler} [Pac. J. Math. 6, 501--516 (1956; Zbl 0072.29902)]), \(K_{\mathcal U}\) be the Bergman kernel of \({\mathcal U}\), and \(dV_\alpha(z):=K_{\mathcal U}(z,z)^{-\alpha}dV(z)\), where \(\alpha\in{\mathbb R}\) and \(dV(z)\) is the Lebesgue measure on \({\mathcal U}\). For a positive Borel measure \(\mu\), let \(T_\mu\) be the Toeplitz operator with symbol \(\mu\) on the Bergman space \(L_a^2({\mathcal U},dV_\alpha)\). The following three results are proved. Theorem A. The following conditions are all equivalent. (a) \(T_\mu\) is a bounded operator on \(L_a^2({\mathcal U},dV_\alpha)\). (b) The Berezin symbol \(\widetilde{\mu}\) of \(\mu\) is a bounded function on \({\mathcal U}\). (c) For all \(p>0\), \(\mu\) is a Carleson measure for \(L_a^p({\mathcal U},dV_\alpha)\). (d) The averaging function \(\widehat{\mu}\) of \(\mu\) is bounded on \({\mathcal U}\). Let \(\|T_\mu\|_e\) denote the essential norm of \(T_\mu\), that is, the distance from \(T_\mu\) to the set of all compact operators. Theorem B. Assume that \(T_\mu\) is a bounded operator on \(L_a^2({\mathcal U},dV_\alpha)\). Then \[ \|T_\mu\|_e \sim \limsup_{z\to\partial {\mathcal U}}\widetilde{\mu}(z) \sim \limsup_{z\to\partial {\mathcal U}}\widehat{\mu}(z), \] where the notation \(\sim\) means that the rations of the two terms are bounded below and above by constants and \(z\to\partial{\mathcal U}\) means that the Euclidean distance from \(z\) to \(\partial{\mathcal U}\) tends to zero. Theorem C. The following conditions are all equivalent. (a) \(T_\mu\) is a compact operator on \(L_a^2({\mathcal U},dV_\alpha)\). (b) The Berezin symbol \(\widetilde{\mu}\) of \(\mu\) tends to zero as \(z\to \partial{\mathcal U}\). (c) For all \(p>0\), \(\mu\) is a vanishing Carleson measure for \(L_a^p({\mathcal U},dV_\alpha)\). (d) The averaging function \(\widehat{\mu}\) of \(\mu\) tends to zero as \(z\to \partial{\mathcal U}\).
