The authors derive an asymptotic model which is called Boussinesq system for the equations of water waves. The system looks like \[ \eta_t - \eta_{xx} + v_x + (\eta v)_x = 0, \quad v_t - v_{xx} + \eta_x + v v_x = 0, \,\, x \in {\mathbb R}, \, t \geq 0. \tag{1} \] In (1) the symbol \(v\) denotes the horizontal component of velocity and by \(\eta \) we understand the free surface elevation. In the paper the authors establish the well-posedness of system (1) in the Sobolev spaces \(H^{s}({\mathbb R}) \times H^{s}({\mathbb R})\) for \(s \geq 0\). Also, in the case \(s > 1/2\) they prove that the maximal time of existence is independent of the regularity index. Furthermore, it is proved by the authors that system (1) is \(C^{0}\) ill-posed in \(H^{s}({\mathbb R}) \times H^{s}({\mathbb R})\) for \(s < 0\). Finally, a discussion on the formation of singularities is provided and a list of blow-up criteria is presented. In the Appendix the decay estimates of the linearized equation are given.
