The functional equation in a single variable \[ h(z)=h(f(z)-g(z))+g(z) \] arises in connection with the problem to determine the translative bivariate means which are invariant with respect to a given translative bivariate mean-type mapping. The authors investigate the above equation when \(f,g\) are given and \(h\) is unknown such that \(f(0)=g(0)=h(0)=0.\) They give some simple conditions on existence and uniqueness of the formal power series solution and also on the complex analytic solution of the equation. Interesting remarks (e.g. on the existence of entire solutions) and applications are also presented.
