Let \(K\) be an algebraic number field, \(O_K\) its ring of integers, and for \(\alpha \in K\) let \(\overline{| \alpha|}\) be the maximum of the absolute values of all conjugates of \(\alpha\) inside \(\mathbb C\). Supposing that \(K\) is not a CM-field with only real units, it is proved that there exists an integral basis for \(O_K\) with units \(\varepsilon_i\) such that \(\overline {| \varepsilon_i|}\) is bounded by a constant depending only on the degree of \(K\) and the regulator of \(K\). From this result one can derive that for \(K\) as above, each algebraic integer can be written as a sum of units with rational coefficients, where the denominators of these coefficients are from a fixed finite set of rational integers. Finally it is proved that for any number field \(K\) and for any \(m \in \mathbb N\) exceeding some bound depending on the degree of \(K\) and the discriminant of \(K\), each element of \(O_K\) can be represented as a sum of algebraic integers of \(K\), where the absolute value of the norm of these summands is bounded by \(m\).
