Given a natural number \(N\) and a continuous linear operator \(v\) between the Banach spaces \(X\) and \(Y\) the authors consider the optimal constant, \(Q_N(v)\), such that \[ \sum_{n=1}^N\|v(a_n)\|_Y\leq Q_N(v)\sup_{t\in {\mathbb R}}\left\|\sum_{n=1}^Na_n n^{it}\right\|_X \] for all \(a_1,\dots, a_n\) in \(X\), and the optimal constant, \(Q_N^M(Q)\), such that \[ \sum_{n=1}^N\|v(a_n)\|_Y\leq Q_N(v)\sup_{t\in {\mathbb R}}\left\|\sum_{n=1}^Na_n n^{it}\right\|_X, \] such that for all \(a_1,\dots, a_n\) in \(X\) with \(a_n=0\) unless \(n\) has precisely \(M\) prime divisors up to multiplicity. They show that when \(v\) is the identity operator, \(id_X\), on a Banach space \(X\) then \[ Q_N(id_X)={ {\sqrt{N}}\over{e^{{1\over{\sqrt{2}}}+o(1)\sqrt{\log N\log\log N}}}} \] while \(Q_N^M(id_v)\) is proportional to \({{N^{{M-1}\over{2M}}}\over{(\log N)^{{M-1} \over{2}}}}\). Upper estimates for \(Q_N(v)\) and \(Q_N^M(v)\) are obtained for \((r,1)\)-summing operators into \(q\)-concave Banach lattices while lower estimates are obtained for \(Q_N^M(v)\) with \(v\) acting between finite dimensional \(\ell_p\) spaces. Upper estimates are also given for operators from \(\ell_1\) into \(\ell_p\).
