One of the corollaries from \textit{V. V. Filippov} [Sov. Math., Dokl. 13, 250--254; translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk. SSSR 202, 1016--1019 (1972; Zbl 0243.54032)] was the existence of compact spaces \(A\) and \(B\) such that \(\dim A = \) ind \(A = 1\), \(\dim B = \) ind \( B = 2\) and \(\dim (A \times B) = 3 < 4 = \) ind\( (A \times B).\) In the present paper the author constructs for each integer \(n \geq 2\) a metrizable compactum \(\Phi_n\) and a compactum \(Y_n\) such that \(\dim \Phi_n = \dim Y_n = \) ind \(Y_n = n\) and \(\dim (\Phi_n \times Y_n) = n+1 < 2n = \) ind\((\Phi_n \times Y_n)\). Earlier he suggested, see \textit{V. A. Chatyrko, K. L. Kozlov} and \textit{B. A. Pasynkov} [Topol. Proc. 25(Summer), 43-72 (2000; Zbl 1026.54038)]), for each integer \(n \geq 2\), a metrizable compactum \(\chi_n\) and a first countable compactum \(X_n\) such that \(\dim \chi_n = \dim X_n = \) ind \(X_n = n\) and \(\dim (\chi_n \times X_n) = \dim (\chi_n)^2 = 2n-1 < 2n = \) ind\((\chi_n \times X_n) \leq \) ind\((\chi_n)^2\). Note that unlike the compacta \(A, B\), for which ind\((A \times B) > \) ind \(A + \) ind \( B\), for the compacta \(X, Y, \chi, \Phi\) we have ind\((\chi \times X) = \) ind \(\chi + \) ind \( X\), ind \((\Phi \times Y) = \) ind \(\Phi + \) ind \( Y\). Several questions remain open.
