Let \(X\) be a topological space and \(C_{p}(X)\) be the set of all continuous real-valued functions on \(X\) endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence. The space \(X\) is called an \(\alpha_{1}\) space if for each \(x\in X\), each countable sheaf \(\{ A_{n}:n\in \mathbb{N}\}\) at \(x\) can be amalgamated as follows: there are cofinite subsets \(B_{n}\subset A_{n}\), \(n\in \mathbb{N}\), such that \(\bigcup_{n}B_{n}\) converges to \(x\). In this work, the authors show that \(C_{p}(X)\) is an \(\alpha_{1}\) space if and only if each Borel image of \(X\) in \(\mathbb{N}^{\mathbb{N}}\) is bounded. As an application, they use this result to solve several open problems concerning spaces of continuous functions.
