Alexander Grothendieck first conjectured that ``hyperbolic'' schemes over a global field could be recovered from their étale fundamental group. The present paper deals with a related problem: Recover a function-field of transcendence degree at least two from its absolute Galois group. This is done here for function-fields over the algebraic closure of a finite field. In fact it suffices to consider the maximal \(l\)-adic quotient which is nilpotent of length two. The result is stronger (no arithmetic conditions) as well as weaker (much bigger group) than Grothendieck's anabelian conjecture. The proof uses valuations. Many parts have been previously published as a program which has now been completed.
