The author studies a general method for the construction of scaling functions for a multiresolution analysis in \(\mathbb R^n\) with an arbitrary expanding matrix with integer coefficients starting from a scaling function of the form \(\hat \varphi=\chi_S\) where \(S\subset \mathbb R^n\) is a scaling set. Furthermore, it is shown that each scaling function giving a multiresolution analysis can be obtained in this way. A number of examples is given.
