Let \(q:[a,\infty )\rightarrow (0,\infty )\) be a continuous and integrable (on \((a,\infty )\)) function, \(\gamma >0\), \(\neq 1\). By using the theory of regularly varying functions (see [\textit{N. H. Bingham, C. M. Goldie} and \textit{J. L. Teugels}, Regular variation. Cambridge etc.: Cambridge University Press (1987; Zbl 0617.26001)]) and the Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point theorem the authors obtain the existence and the precise asymptotic behavior of slowly and of regularly varying solutions of index 1 of the equation \[ x''(t)+q(t) |x(t)|^{\gamma } sgn x(t) = 0 . \] The proof of the main results depends on the parallel ones for the corresponding linear equation which are proved in Theorems 7 and 8. (Theorem 7 is a special case of Theorem 1.9 in [\textit{V. Marić}, ``Regular variation and differential equations'', Lect. Notes Math. 1726. (2000; Zbl 0946.34001)] where \(q(t)\) may change sign).
