Let \(R\) denote a ring with center \(Z(R)\), let \(S\) be a subset of \(R\), and for \(x,y\in R\) let \([x,y]\) denote the commutator \(xy-yx\). A mapping \(f\colon S\to R\) is called strong commutativity-preserving on \(S\) if \([f(x),f(y)]=[x,y]\) for all \(x,y\in S\). Such maps were introduced by the reviewer and \textit{M. N. Daif} [Can. Math. Bull. 37, No. 4, 443-447 (1994; Zbl 0820.16031)] and have subsequently been studied by various authors. This paper is concerned with strong commutativity-preserving maps \(f\) on the set \(K\) of skew elements of a prime ring \(R\) with involution, of characteristic not 2. The principal theorem asserts that, provided \(R\) is not an order in a central simple algebra of dimension 4, 9, or 16, there exists a map \(\mu\colon K\to Z(R)\) such that \(f(x)=x+\mu(x)\) for all \(x\in K\) or \(f(x)=-x+\mu(x)\) for all \(x\in K\).
