This paper is a review article dealing with the Takagi function \(T\), its history, properties, generalizations, and some of its applications to other mathematical fields. In particular, the following points are addressed: {\parindent=6mm\begin{itemize}\item[-] Analytical aspects such as nondifferentiability, Hölder continuity, and modulus of continuity. \item[-] Properties of the graph of \(T\) such as global and local extrema, partial self-similarity, and \(\sigma\)-finite linear measure. \item[-] Different representations of \(T\). \item[-] Functional equations for \(T\). \item[-] Investigation of the level sets of \(T\), some very recent results and open problems. \item[-] Generalizations of \(T\) such as the general Takagi-van der Waerden functions, the Takagi class, and Zygmund spaces. \item[-] Some applications of \(T\) in other mathematical areas. \end{itemize}}
