Let \(k\) be a field of characteristic zero and let \(k^{[n]}:=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\) be the polynomial ring with variables \(x_i\) and coefficients in \(k\). An automorphism \((f_1,\ldots,f_n): k^{[n]}\to k^{[n]}\) is \textit{elementary} if there exists \(i_0\in\{1,\ldots,n\}\) and \(a\in k\setminus\{0\}\), such that \(f_{i_0}=ax_{i_0}+Q(x_1,\ldots, \widehat{x_{i_0}},\ldots, x_n)\) and \(f_i=x_i\) for \(i\neq i_0\). The \textit{tame} subgroup \(T_n(k)\) of the automorphism group of \(k^{[n]}\) is the one generated by elementary automorphisms. A non-tame automorphism is \textit{wild}. \textit{I. P. Shestakov} and \textit{U. U. Umirbaev} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 17, No. 1, 197--227 (2004; Zbl 1056.14085)] gave a criterion for deciding wildness of an automorphism of \(k^{[3]}\) and concluded in particular that an automorphism constructed by Nagata is wild. For \(n\geq 4\) the question whether \(T_n(k)\) is a proper subgroup of \(\text{Aut}_k(k^{[n]})\) is open. The \textit{multidegree} of \(F=(f_1,\ldots,f_n)\) is \(\text{mdeg} F=(\deg f_1,\ldots,\deg f_n)\). Recently, \textit{M. Karaś} [Diss. Math. 477, 55 p. (2011; Zbl 1230.14090)], \textit{M. Karaś} and \textit{J. Zygadło} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 215, No. 12, 2843--2846 (2011; Zbl 1234.14041)] and others gave various necessary criteria for triples of positive integers to be multidegrees of tame or wild automorphisms of \(k^{[3]}\). Relying on his generalization of the theory of Shestakov-Umirbaev [Tohoku Math. J. (2) 62, No. 1, 75--115 (2010; Zbl 1210.14072)] the author proves more general criteria (Theorem 1.3, Theorem 2.5) which unify the previously existing ones.
