The author constructs reduced and full semigroup \(C^*\)-algebras for left cancellative semigroups. This provides a general framework for constructions of \textit{A. Nika} [J. Oper. Theory 27, No. 1, 17--52 (1992; Zbl 0809.46058)] and covers Toeplitz algebras attached to rings of integers in number fields due to Cuntz; see [\textit{J. Cuntz}, \textit{C. Deninger} and \textit{M. Laca}, \(C^*\)-algebras of Toeplitz type associated with algebraic number fields, preprint, \url{arXiv:1105.5352v3}]. In addition, the constructions are more tractable than those of \textit{G. Murphy} [Pac. J. Math. 148, No. 2, 319--349 (1991; Zbl 0741.46026)] and [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 68, No.2, 423--448 (1994; Zbl 0801.46077)] and allow one to characterize (left) amenability of semigroups very much in the same spirit as in the group case. The construction of \(C^*\)-algebras for semigroup actions by automorphisms is investigated as well.
