A square matrix \(A\) is called EP if \(AA^\dagger=A^\dagger A\), where \(A^\dagger\) denotes the Moore-Penrose inverse of \(A\). Inspired by \textit{J.~K. Baksalary} and \textit{O.~M. Baksalary} [Linear Algebra Appl. 388, 25--29 (2004; Zbl 1081.15017)], the authors consider the invertibility of a linear combination of EP matrices \(A\) and \(B\) in the case when they are ordered by some of partial orderings. In particular, in the case when \(A\) and \(B\) are star orthogonal, it is shown that the non-singularity of their linear combination \(c_1A + c_2B\) is independent of the choice of nonzero complex scalars \(c_1\) and \(c_2\). Some similar results in the cases when one considers the sharp ordering on the set of group invertible matrices are investigated.
