A closed, connected, orientable \(n\)-manifold \(M\) with fundamental group \(\pi\) is \textit{essential}, if there is a classifying map \(f: M\rightarrow K(\pi ,1)\) into the \((n-1)\)-skeleton of \(K(\pi ,1)\). This is the case if and only if the induced homomorphism \(f_* : H_n (M)\rightarrow H_n (K(\pi ,1))\) is non-trivial. \(M\) is \textit{rationally essential}, if a classifying map induces a nontrivial homomorphism \(f_* : H_n (M;\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow H_n (K(\pi ,1);\mathbb{Q})\). For a class \(\mathcal{C}\) of manifolds, \(\mathcal{EC}\) denotes the subclass of \(\mathcal{C}\) consisting of rationally essential manifolds, and \(\mathcal{C}(\pi ,n)\) denotes a subclass of \(\mathcal{C}\) consisting of \(n\)-dimensional manifolds with fundamental group \(\pi\). Let \(\mathcal{A}\), \(\mathcal{HS}\), \(\mathcal{S}\), \(\mathcal{CS}\) denote the class of algebraic, symplectic manifolds with the hard Lefschetz property, symplectic manifolds, and cohomologically symplectic manifolds, respectively. The author considers the question: For which groups \(\pi\) and values \(n\) is \(\mathcal{EC}(\pi ,n)\) non-empty? Dranishnikov and Rudyak conjectured that if \(\mathcal{C}\) is one of the first three classes and \(n>2\), then the condition \(\mathcal{EC}(\pi ,n)\neq \emptyset\) implies that \(\mathcal{EC}(\pi ,n-2)\neq \emptyset\). The author proves the weaker conjecture for all the above classes with symplectically aspherical \(2\)-form. Furthermore he proves that all inclusions \(\mathcal{EA}\subset \mathcal{EHS}\subset \mathcal{ES}\subset \mathcal{ECS}\) are proper.
