Let \(A\) be a (possibly unbounded) operator on a Hilbert space. A functional calculus for \(A\) with respect to an algebra \(\mathcal{S}\) of scalar functions is a mapping \(f\mapsto f(A)\) (for \(f\in\mathcal{S}\)) that satisfies: (i) the function \(f\equiv 1\) maps to the identity operator; (ii) if \(f(s)=(s-\alpha)^{-1}\), then \(f(A)=(A-\alpha I)^{-1}\); (iii) \((f_1f_2)(A) = f_1(A)f_2(A)\). Let \(\mathcal{H}^{-}_{\infty}\) denote the space of all bounded analytic functions on the left half-plane \(\{s\in\mathbb{C}\;|\;\text{Re}(s)<0\}\). Let \(A\) be as above and assume that \(A\) generates an exponentially stable semigroup. It is known that there exists such an operator \(A\) which does not have a bounded functional calculus with respect to \(\mathcal{H}^{-}_{\infty}\). The main result of the paper shows, however, that an unbounded \(\mathcal{H}^{-}_{\infty}\) calculus for \(A\) always exists. The construction of \(g(A)\), for each \(g\in\mathcal{H}^{-}_{\infty}\), makes use of the Toeplitz operator associated with \(g\). Besides the main result, various sufficient conditions (involving the operator \(A\) and the semigroup it generates) are given to guarantee the existence of a bounded \(\mathcal{H}^{-}_{\infty}\) calculus.
