The Cauchy problem for a Klein-Gordon type equation with the coefficient \(m(t)\) being a positive function is considered. The aim of the paper is to obtain some conditions for \(m(t)\) in order to derive energy estimates for solutions of the Cauchy problem. One performs a Fourier transform with respect to the space variable of the system and one defines the estimate of generalized energy conservation for suitable energy functional to the solution of the transformed system. The square of the coefficient \(m(t)\) is expressed as a sum of two functions, the perturbation function and the square of a positive monotone decreasing shape function. The two main results of the paper investigate additional conditions on the perturbation and the shape function in order that the energy of the solution satisfies the estimate of generalized energy conservation.
