This paper introduces the notion of interlacing measures generalizing the notion of interlacing sequences: A bounded signed measure \(\tau\) is interlacing if and only if there exists a probability distribution \(\mu\) such that the ordinary Cauchy-Stieltjes transform of \(\mu\) equals the multiplicative version of this transform for \(\tau\). This central identity arises in a number of contexts: distributions of mean values of Poisson-Dirichlet random measures, the Markov moment problem, exponential representations of functions of negative imaginary type, the spectral shift function of a self-adjoint operator, and the Plancherel growth of Young diagrams. These various applications are fully exhibited, combinatorial characterizations concerning characters of symmetric groups and continued fractions are given. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0879.00012].
