This paper introduces the notion of interlacing measures generalizing the notion of interlacing sequences: A bounded signed measure \(\tau\) is interlacing if and only if there exists a probability distribution \(\mu\) such that the ordinary Cauchy-Stieltjes transform of \(\mu\) equals the multiplicative version of this transform for \(\tau\). This central identity arises in a number of contexts: distributions of mean values of Poisson-Dirichlet random measures, the Markov moment problem, exponential representations of functions of negative imaginary type, the spectral shift function of a self-adjoint operator, and the Plancherel growth of Young diagrams. These various applications are fully exhibited, combinatorial characterizations concerning characters of symmetric groups and continued fractions are given.
