The aim of the paper under review is to use an invariant called the growth rate of symplectic homology to construct many examples of cotangent bundles which are not symplectomorphic to any smooth affine variety. A contact analogue of this result is given: The unit cotangent bundle of one of these manifolds is not Stein fillable by a Stein domain whose completion is a symplectomorphic smooth affine variety. This invariant was defined by \textit{P. Seidel} [in: Current developments in mathematics. Somerville, MA: International Press. 211--253 (2008; Zbl 1165.57020)]. Convex symplectic manifolds are investigated in Appendix A and a maximum principle is obtained in Appendix B.
