The main results (Theorems 1.1, 1.3 and Corollary 1.5) of the paper can be restated as follows. Let \(p\) be a prime and let \(A\) be a finite \(p'\)-group acting on a finite abelian \(p\)-group \(P\). Theorem. Let \(R\) be an \(A\)-invariant subgroup of \(\Omega_1(P)\). Then there are \(A\)-invariant subgroups \(S\), \(S_1\) of \(P\) such that \(P=S\times S_1\) and \(\Omega_1(S)=R\). Also if \(R\) is \(A\)-irreducible, then \(S\) is homocyclic of exponent depending on \(R\). This result is further developed in Section 1 and generalized in Section 3. These results are applied in Section 2 to the study of monolithic irreducible complex characters of a finite group.
